I read this in the book "Getting better bit(e) by bit(e)" written by Ulrike Schmidt and Janet Treasure (link to amazon)
Basically you write 2 letters to a friend or loved one (that you don't send) to be read as if it's 5 years in the future. The first letter you write is as if you didn't make any attempt to recover from your binging- what would your life look like in 5 years as a result? Would you have gained weight? How much? Would you have depression as a result? What about your school or work life? Where would you be working if you'd been binging for 5 years? What about your relationships? How would your life in general be if you made no attempt to recover?
The second letter you write to your friend is about how your life is if you made the choice to recover. What would be better about your life if you partially or fully recovered from your binging? Would you have maintained or lost weight? Would you be healthier? What about your work and your relationships?
You write these two letters and keep them safe. When you feel the urge to binge then read them.
I wrote mine, and they were really powerful.
I know that for me in 5 years time if I am still binging I will be about 10 stone (140lb) heavier. I doubt I would have a job as I'd be too unfit to work. My personal relationships would be strained as my binging causes me to lie to the ones I love. I know that my life would be terrible.
In 5 years if I were recovered I would be more confident, I would have a much better relationship with my loved ones and I would be so much healthier!
I know which letter I want to choose to come true.
